How much does it cost to install a ceiling fan?
Most homeowners pay $146 to $360 to have a ceiling fan installed, with a 2026 national average of $253, per Angi (updated September 25, 2026). The bigger split is whether the wiring is already there.

Swap vs. new wiring: what's the difference in cost?
A swap reuses the wiring and box that are already in the ceiling, so it's mostly labor. A new location means running new wiring, installing a fan-rated box and sometimes cutting into drywall, Taskrabbit says. That's why the two jobs are priced so differently.
| Swap (existing wiring) | New location (new wiring) | |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost | $150 – $500 with the fan (HomeGuide) | $400 – $1,000 with the fan (HomeGuide) |
| Taskrabbit's estimate | $100 – $300 | $250 – $1,000 |
| Time on the job | About 1 hour (HomeGuide) | 2 – 3 hours on average (HomeGuide) |
| Who can do it | Often a handyperson | A licensed electrician (This Old House) |
| Permit | Usually not needed (HomeGuide) | May be required locally |

How much does it cost to install a ceiling fan with no existing wiring?
Plan on $400 to $1,000 for a new fan with new wiring, per HomeGuide, and more if the job needs a new circuit or a lot of ceiling work. This Old House says especially complex jobs with new circuits can reach $2,000.
The add-ons that drive that number:
- Running new wiring: $200 to $400 or more, per HomeGuide. This Old House lists wiring installation at $350 to $2,000.
- A new circuit, if the existing one has no room: $150 to $300 (HomeGuide). Angi gives $150 to $600.
- A wall switch: $50 to $200 extra (HomeGuide).
- Drywall patching: every spot where the wire path changes direction can mean another access hole, This Old House notes, and each one adds labor and repair.
HomeGuide notes that new wiring is needed when the fan goes where no fixture existed before. So if the room already has a ceiling light, ask the electrician whether that box is fan-rated or just needs replacing.
How much do electricians charge to install a ceiling fan?
Electricians charge about $60 to $130 or more an hour, per HomeGuide, and Angi's range is $50 to $130. Many also have a minimum job fee of $100 to $200 or more, even for small jobs, HomeGuide says.
| Who | Hourly rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Electrician | $60 – $130+ | HomeGuide |
| Electrician | $50 – $130 | Angi |
| Handyperson | $50 – $80+ | HomeGuide |
| Taskrabbit "Electrical Help" Tasker | $44 average | Taskrabbit |
That minimum fee is why bundling helps. Taskrabbit points out that installing several fans in one visit can cut the per-fan labor cost.
Should you hire an electrician to install a ceiling fan?
Hire a licensed electrician if the fan is going where there's no wiring, or if you need any wiring changes, This Old House says. A straight swap on a low ceiling is a job a handyperson, or a careful homeowner, can often handle.
If you do it yourself, the Electrical Safety Foundation International says to switch off the circuit breaker for that circuit and test the wires before you touch them. A pen-style tester like the Klein Tools NCVT-3P makes that check quick. ESFI still recommends a qualified, licensed electrician for any electrical work in your home.

What else adds to the cost?
- The fan itself. HomeGuide puts standard fans at $50 to $300 and dual-motor fans at $200 to $1,500, fan only.
- High or vaulted ceilings. Taskrabbit estimates $300 to $600 for a vaulted-ceiling install. A longer downrod is $10 to $75 (HomeGuide).
- Outdoor fans. Taskrabbit estimates $250 to $500 to install one.
- Smart fans. $150 to $600 to install and set up, per Taskrabbit.
- Permits. $20 to $100, plus $25 to $75 where an inspection is required, per Angi. Your electrician usually pulls the permit.
How much does Lowe's charge to install a ceiling fan?
Lowe's doesn't publish one flat price. Its installation page says the cost varies by job. You add installation to your cart with an eligible fan and schedule it at checkout.
Here's what Lowe's says is included, as of October 20, 2026:
- Assembly, removal of the old fixture up to 15 feet high, and haul-away if you want it.
- Wiring the new fan to an existing electrical box. Lowe's won't install where there's no existing wiring.
- Installing a downrod extension and a replacement wall switch, plus a reinforcing kit if one is needed (you buy the kit separately).
- A one-year labor warranty from Lowe's.
Extra charges may apply above 15 feet or if a permit is required. So, will Lowe's install your fan if you buy it there? Yes, if it's an eligible fan and you're replacing an existing fixture. For a new location, you'll need an electrician.
Can a ceiling fan help you save on energy?
An efficient one can. ENERGY STAR certified ceiling fans are up to 44% more efficient than conventional fans, according to ENERGY STAR. Angi notes that ENERGY STAR models may qualify for rebates.
Rebates depend on your utility. See how to find utility rebates, or run your ZIP through the rebate finder.
How do you get a fair quote?
- Get at least three quotes, as HomeGuide suggests, from licensed electricians.
- Say up front whether it's a swap or a new location, and how high the ceiling is.
- Ask if the price includes the fan, a fan-rated box, a switch, the permit and drywall patching.
- If you have more than one fan, price them as one visit.
- Don't pay in full before the work is done.
