Gear to keep on hand for your garage door

A garage door is the biggest moving thing in your house. The handbook asks you to inspect it monthly and lubricate it twice a year. This is the small kit for that.

3-IN-ONE professional garage door lubricant

Twice a year, a spray like the 3-IN-ONE garage door lubricant is all the door needs. The International Door Association suggests lubricating hinges, rollers and tracks about twice a year. This spray has a straw that either streams or fans.

What to look for: Spray the hinges and rollers lightly, then wipe off the drips. Leave the track clean and dry. The springs and cables are under heavy tension, so leave anything beyond a light spray on them to a pro.

Stanley PowerLock 25-foot tape measure

Any tape measure works, and the Stanley PowerLock 25-foot is a good one to check your sensor height. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says safety photo eyes should sit 4 to 6 inches above the floor. A tape measure takes ten seconds and tells you if yours are right.

What to look for: Measure both sensors from the floor to the center of each eye. They should match each other as well.

M-D Building Products 3749 garage door bottom seal

A worn bottom seal can be replaced with something like the M-D Building Products 3749. The handbook says to check the bottom seal for cracks and replace a worn one before cold weather. A cracked seal lets in water, leaves and mice.

What to look for: Measure your door's width and the channel on the bottom of the door before you order. This one is 16 feet long and you cut it to size.

If the opener itself seems dead, the electrical safety gear list helps you test the outlet first.

A worn bottom seal also lets mice in, and the pest control gear list covers sealing gaps.
