Short answer: A one-time pest control visit costs $100 to $600, per HomeGuide, and Angi's 2026 national average is about $172 per service. Plans cost less per visit, $40 to $75 a month or $100 to $300 a quarter, but they add up over a year, and Angi says the first visit on a plan runs $150 to $300.

How much does pest control cost?
Most single treatments land between $100 and $600. The three big cost guides measure it a little differently:
| Source | What it measures | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Angi, Oct 2026 | Average service, from a survey of Angi customers | About $172 average; $50 โ $500 range |
| Angi, Oct 2026 | One-time service, 1,500 sq ft home | $300 โ $550 |
| HomeGuide, Jan 2026 | One-time exterminator visit | $100 โ $600 |
| This Old House, Mar 2026 | One appointment for a standard infestation | $171 average; $50 โ $500 range |
Sources: Angi, pest control cost (updated October 9, 2026), HomeGuide, exterminator cost (January 9, 2026) and This Old House, pest control cost (updated March 12, 2026).
The low end is a quick spray for ants or spiders. The high end is a big infestation, a large home or a hard-to-reach spot like an attic or wall.
One-time visit or a pest control plan: which costs less?
A one-time visit costs less if the problem is a single event, like one wasp nest. A plan costs less per visit, but you pay for every visit whether you see bugs or not. Here's the per-visit price and what it adds up to over a year:
| Option | Price per visit | Visits a year | Yearly total (our math) |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-time visit | $100 โ $600 (HomeGuide); $300 โ $550 (Angi) | 1 | $100 โ $600 |
| Monthly plan | $40 โ $75 (HomeGuide); $40 โ $70 (Angi) | 12 | $480 โ $900 |
| Quarterly plan | $100 โ $300 (HomeGuide and Angi) | 4 | $400 โ $1,200 |
| Annual visit | $300 โ $900 (HomeGuide); $300 โ $550 (Angi) | 1 | $300 โ $900 |
Yearly totals multiply HomeGuide's per-visit ranges. Angi adds that the first visit on an ongoing plan costs $150 to $300, so budget for that on top of year one.
When a plan makes sense. Angi says a one-off problem like a wasp nest shouldn't need regular service, but homes in areas prone to ticks, termites and ants likely need at least yearly service, and persistent problems may need quarterly or monthly visits. This Old House says routine service can pay off in humid, pest-prone climates.
When one-time makes sense. A single nest, a few mice after a cold snap, or a problem you can fix by sealing a gap. If the bugs come back within a few months, price a quarterly plan.
How much does pest control cost by pest?
The pest decides the method, and the method decides most of the price. Ants and spiders are cheap; bed bugs and termites aren't.
| Pest | Angi | HomeGuide |
|---|---|---|
| Ants | $100 โ $500 | $200 โ $300 |
| Cockroaches | $100 โ $600 | $100 โ $600 |
| Spiders | $100 โ $500 | $100 โ $300 |
| Mice and rats | $180 โ $600 | $150 โ $600 |
| Fleas | $100 โ $400 | $200 โ $400 |
| Wasps and hornets | $300 โ $700 | $300 โ $700 |
| Mosquitoes | $350 โ $500 | $80 โ $150 a visit; $350 โ $1,000 a season |
| Bed bugs | $1,000 โ $4,000 | $300 โ $500 a room; $2,500 โ $5,000 a home |
| Termites | $250 โ $1,000 | $225 โ $2,500 (barrier); $2,000 โ $8,000 (tenting) |
Termites have their own pricing, bonds and inspections. See our termite treatment cost guide before you sign a termite contract.
How does home size change the price?
Bigger homes take more time and more product. Angi's one-time prices by square footage:
| Home size | One-time service |
|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft | $250 โ $450 |
| 1,500 sq ft | $300 โ $550 |
| 2,000 sq ft | $350 โ $600 |
| 2,500 sq ft | $400 โ $675 |
| 3,000 sq ft | $450 โ $750 |
| 4,000 sq ft | $550 โ $900 |
Size isn't everything, though. University of Florida IFAS Extension says quotes should be based on an inspection of your home, and to be wary of companies that quote from the size of your house alone.
What does pest control cost in my area?
Prices swing by city. Angi's 2026 averages per service:
| City | Average | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| New York City | $255 | $160 โ $350 |
| Chicago | $165 | $130 โ $220 |
| Dallas | $165 | $90 โ $240 |
| Orlando | $150 | $95 โ $210 |
| Denver | $130 | $100 โ $175 |
| Phoenix | $105 | $60 โ $155 |
| Sacramento | $105 | $60 โ $150 |
For your own ZIP, the fastest check is two or three local quotes. Start with pest control companies in your state.
What extra fees show up on a pest control quote?
- Inspection fee: $125 to $450, per Angi. Some companies inspect for free; others charge, especially for termites or bed bugs. HomeGuide puts a general pest inspection at $50 to $200.
- First visit on a plan: $150 to $300, per Angi. It's the heavy initial treatment; follow-ups are cheaper.
- Hard-to-reach areas: Angi says complex attic removals for several animals can run as high as $1,500, and it flags pests inside walls as another tricky spot.
- Fumigation or heat: HomeGuide lists heat treatment at $2,000 to $6,000 and tenting at $2,000 to $8,000+. It's rare outside bed bugs, termites and severe roach problems.
- Repairs: chewed wiring, damaged drywall or insulation is a separate bill.
If pests came in through gaps around doors, windows or the attic, sealing them is part of the fix. UF IFAS notes that sealing gaps also cuts air loss, which saves on utility bills. Air sealing and insulation often qualify for utility rebates, so run your ZIP through the rebate finder before you pay for that work.
Is a pest control contract worth it?
It can be, if you read the terms first. UF IFAS Extension suggests asking every company these questions before you sign:
- How long is the contract, how often do you service, and how fast do you respond to a callback?
- What guarantee do you offer, and what voids the contract?
- Is there a fee for added services, and when does it apply?
- Do you use integrated pest management, meaning inspection and monitoring first, with treatment only as needed?
The EPA's tips add a few red flags: companies that offer a special price only if you sign today, quote a per-gallon price, claim a secret formula, or say a government agency endorses them. The EPA says government agencies don't endorse any pest control company.
Can you do pest control yourself?
For a few ants or a single mouse, often yes. This Old House says DIY products usually cost less than $100, and Angi says DIY methods like bug bombs are only partly effective on substantial infestations. If you've treated twice and still see pests, or you're dealing with bed bugs, termites, rodents in the walls or stinging insects, call a licensed pro.
How do you get a fair pest control quote?
- Get written quotes from three companies. The EPA says most companies give free estimates, and most problems can wait a few days while you compare.
- Check the license. The EPA says each company must have at least one certified, licensed commercial applicator; our contractor licensing guide links each state's lookup.
- Ask which pest they found and what product they'll use. The EPA says reliable applicators will give you copies of the pesticide labels.
- Compare one-time vs. plan pricing using the yearly totals above, first visit included.
- Get the guarantee and cancellation terms in writing.
