What to know about plumbing in Macon

The 1994 flood rebuilt Macon's water

Macon's old Riverside Drive Water Treatment Plant was heavily damaged in July 1994, when Tropical Storm Alberto dropped nearly 20 inches of rain on Middle Georgia and the Ocmulgee River flooded the city. The Macon Water Authority replaced it with the Frank C. Amerson, Jr. Water Treatment Plant, which opened July 10, 2000 beside Javors J. Lucas Lake and can produce 60 million gallons per day. A booster station linked to the Ocmulgee River intake lets the plant keep running during maintenance or an emergency. Production questions go to the MWA at 478-464-5600. Irrigation systems need backflow devices

The Macon Water Authority requires all irrigation systems, along with new commercial and industrial facilities, to have an approved backflow prevention device on the customer side of the meter. Existing devices at businesses must be tested every year by a certified backflow prevention tester, and testers now file results through an online portal with a 15 dollar fee per passing test. An MWA audit in September 2003 found only 3 percent of local businesses had adequate protection, a figure the authority says has since risen to 93 percent. Call the backflow program at 478-464-5643 before adding a sprinkler system. Source: Macon Water Authority: Backflow Prevention

Look up your service line online

The Macon Water Authority publishes its water service line inventory on the Georgia Environmental Protection Division's public transparency dashboard at ga-epd.120water-ptd.com. After accepting the disclaimer, type a home or business address into the Location Search box to see the line material recorded for that property. The effort is meant to support replacing lines that may contain lead or galvanized material. If your address is missing or the result looks wrong, the MWA's laboratory and environmental compliance manager can be reached at 478-464-5678. Frequently asked questions

Who is a reputable plumber in Macon, GA?

How much does a plumber charge per hour in Georgia?

Georgia does not set plumber rates, so compare written quotes. Some local costs are fixed, such as the Macon Water Authority's 15 dollar fee for each passing backflow test submitted through its portal.

Where does Macon's drinking water come from?

The Macon Water Authority pumps water from Javors J. Lucas Lake into the Frank C. Amerson, Jr. Water Treatment Plant, with a backup connection to its Ocmulgee River intake. The plant opened in 2000 after the 1994 flood damaged the old Riverside Drive plant.
