An EF2 tornado with estimated maximum winds of 135 mph struck eastern Mecklenburg County at about 2:34 a.m. on March 3, 2012, the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg reported. Its path ran 3.2 miles into western Cabarrus County and was up to 200 yards wide. In Mecklenburg, 162 homes had some impact, 29 were left uninhabitable and four were destroyed. Earlier that evening, quarter sized hail fell 9 miles south-southwest of center city, and marble sized hail was reported inside the 485 loop in southwest Charlotte.
